Samsung Unpacked had some similarities with Apple’s recent event. But the Galaxy S24 series has a chance to do better than the iPhone 15.
We’re using titanium now! The top model costs $100 more! We’re ditching leather cases!
These statements could apply to both Apple’s event in September and Samsung’s event this week.
I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I like that Samsung cares about the environment and the materials they use, and I hope other phone makers will follow their example in 2024. The problem is that this is not a new story, and it didn’t have a happy ending before. Let me tell you why.
The coating issue and the FineWoven case Apple introduced the iPhone 15 Pro with a titanium frame, and people were excited. But then they noticed how easily the coating on the frame got scratched. If you had an iPhone that was not in Natural Titanium color and you didn’t use a case, the coating would soon wear off and show the lighter titanium underneath. Some users only chose the Natural color to avoid this problem.
The coating is not the only thing to blame here. Titanium is very prone to scratches in the first place. The real problem was the dark colors that Apple chose. Keep that in mind.
Then there was the FineWoven case, Apple’s replacement for its leather cases. It was made with eco-friendly materials, but it cost the same as the leather ones: $59. The problem here was not the idea or the intention behind the product, but how it was made.
He said that the back of the case felt like cheap fabric and the sides were not grippy enough to hold the phone securely. Things got worse when Jason opened the case on camera and saw that it was easy to make scratch marks on it (see the picture above) and very hard to remove them.
How Samsung can fix Apple’s mistakes With the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung can avoid Apple’s mistakes – and they have already started. One thing I noticed during my pre-Unpacked demo was the color of the frames. Except for Titanium Black, all the other colors had light frames. That includes the main color, Titanium Violet, which you can see below.
By using a lighter paint on the titanium, I think that scratches will be less noticeable on the Galaxy S24 Ultra than on the iPhone 15 Pro. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see, and we will be testing the phone in the next few weeks, so stay tuned for our review.
Finally, instead of swapping its leather cases for something completely different, Samsung is now offering a new vegan leather case for the Galaxy S24 series. It may not be as green as Apple’s FineWoven case, but the company says that every vegan leather case is made with at least 30% recycled materials and it is durable.
